About Mikazo Tech Blog

My name is Mike, and this blog is my way of saving people time. If someone has a specific problem that I've encountered before, hopefully these posts will save them the extraneous Googling I had to go through to solve the same problem. Also, when I have something to say about technology today, I will post my thoughts here. Justifying the Purchase of New Hardware

Since I will most likely be receiving an income again soon, I've been thinking about buying a new desktop computer. I'm currently running off my old family computer that I was allowed to have, and it's at least 5 years old, however I upgraded the memory and video card a few months ago to make it tolerable. That wasn't hard to justify, as the thing was slow as a turtle otherwise, and I intended on using it for school. I also use my HP laptop that I bought last year for school, and it hasn't given me anything to gripe about as far as performance.

Neither of my computers are worthy of gaming performance, but I've been letting gaming fall by the wayside lately anyway. My interest in video games is waning, and I have a blog post in me somewhere to let out on that topic. So aside from video games, what might I need a high-performance new desktop for? I thought maybe since I'll eventually be taking a course on parallel computing, that a new quad-core processor might come in handy. However, that's a bit of a stretch to justify spending around $2000 on a new desktop, when I won't even need it for that purpose for a few more years.

I've always wanted to build my own desktop from the ground up, piece by piece, and order each piece seperately, but have never had the money or reason to do it. Does anyone else have justifications to share that they've used in the past? Post a comment.

I think that you should buy a new one so that I can have your laptop. I love you.

I have built several PC's up from the ground up over the years, but as whole computers been falling in price steeply I've given it up.

My interest in video games on the computer is an off and on again battle, only a few games I play a year now, partially because of my schedule. Last games played and beat this year was "Gears Of War 2" and "Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare." What is the last game you played? My Nintendo DS gets a lot of play though, my current game of choice is "Bleach: The Blade of Fate"

Talking about justified spending, I have a friend who bought a top of the line Alienware Laptop just to write papers for school :O (Can we say overboard?), too bad he asked me if it was a good buy AFTER he bought it LOL.

Justifications for building my own computer or for others is that its tailored to that persons needs, if they don’t need much power I can just purchase parts that are average and save them a lot of money, if they want a gaming system then I put in extra ram & a good / great graphics card.

The top reason I build computers piece by piece though is for the choice of parts! I prefer Seagate hard drives over all based on years of using them, I prefer ATI cards over Nvidia for graphics. I prefer Kensington mouse over thers, & etc.

The most recent PC game I bought was Knights of the Old Republic 2, and last time I played my DS was a short Pokemon Diamond obsession. I had missed out on the sapphire/ruby generation and wanted to see if the franchise was still good.

I realized yesterday that my uncle was in the market for a new computer so I'm offering to build him a budget one, as he only uses it for internet and such. Hopefully that will get the urge to build a new computer out of my system and I won't waste money on a shiny new system when it's not needed.

I've been using Nvidia since my old Radeon 7500 died quite a while back. I've always been a fan of Intel over AMD.

Heheh I remember the Pokemon obsession of the gameboy era, I thought it was just a kiddy game so I played it to see what the fuss was about and was hooked! LOL, I beat the red, blue, etc colors, after beating 4 versions I gave it up. Funny I wasn’t a fan of the show though.

I believe I have that KOTOR 2, just played 1 mission I believe.

What kind of parts you have in mind for your uncles computer? What really needs upgrading the most in your PC?

Heheh I used to have a Radeon 7500 too. I am a fan of AMD, cheaper and just about as powerful as Intel :D

When I used to build computers I always favored the Abit brand, any brand you prefer in motherboards?

Same here, I haven't made it all the way through KOTOR 2, I just seem to have lost interest.

I was thinking about one of the lower-end Core 2 Duos for my uncle's PC, and then just maxing out the RAM. Might buy a mobo with on-board video, since he won't be doing anything 3D or whatever. Then find a good case/power supply combo, HDD, optical drive. I hope I didn't forget anything. I haven't ordered it yet anyway.

I just bought some upgrades for my current PC at the start of the summer, some RAM, a video card, and two 19" LCDs, open box for $150 each. Not a bad deal.

I've been using a Gigabyte motherboard for a long time now. Asus was a good brand, but I heard they've gone down hill recently.
